Undergraduate Degree Courses

Undergraduate studies are organized on the basis of two major Degree Courses: Α. History and Β. Archaeology and Art History. Students are required to select one of them during the second year of their studies.

Degree Course A (History)

Course A introduces students to the discipline of history. It is intended to acquaint students with the sources and methodology of historical research, and to provide them with a solid knowledge in a large spectrum of subjects from antiquity to the contemporary era. At the same time the Degree Course A prepares them for a professional career in Education or other relevant fields. The teaching staff and the academic advisors of the Department are constantly at the students’ disposal in order to help them with their module choices.

[1] Alternatively, lectures offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, upon authorization by the academic advisorsν.
[2] Students are permitted to replace 1 history seminar with 2 history lectures or 2 history seminars with 4 history lectures respectively, in which case the number of courses required for the graduation degree amounts to 38 lectures and 5 seminars or to 40 lectures and 4 seminars.
Students who take the maximum required six (6) seminars are allowed to take up to three (3) seminars in the same major subject area. Students who graduate with four (4) or five (5) seminars, cannot take more than two (2) seminars in the same major subject area. Students may select up to one (1) seminar or two (2) replacement lectures from the modules offered by Degree Course B.

Degree Course B Curriculum (Archaeology and History of Art)

Degree Course B acquaints students with the study of the material remains of past civilizations from the prehistoric era up to the Middle Ages, as well as with the History of Ancient and Modern Art. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge and training for professional careers in Education, the Archaeological Service, and public or private museums. The teaching staff and the academic advisors of the Department are constantly at the students’ disposal in order to help them with their module choices.

Besides taught modules, Degree Course B also includes practical training in excavations, surface research and surveys.

[1] It is compulsory that students participate for at least 15 days and preferably after the 4th semester of their studies in excavations or other archaeological research organised by the Department as part of Degree Course B under the supervision of a member of the teaching staff.
